Internet domain names are one of the best ways of locating the use of the Internet geographically.  (See the overview section for more details on this argument)  Domains come in two main type generic top level domains (gTLDs), i.e. .com, .net, and .org and country code top level domains (ccTLDs), .e.g. .de or .uk.  Since most countries outside of the United States make extensive use of their ccTLD it is important to include both types in any comparative analysis.

The number of domain names around the world has grown tremendously over the past two years from 3.3 million in July of 1998 to 33.0 million as of January 2001.

Domains names are highly concentrated, particularly in urban areas.  The top five metropolitan regions of the world - New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, London and Washington DC - account for 17.7 percent of the total domains.
